There are so many out there claiming to be atheist. They believe there is no GOD, but do their actions and words sync up with their declaration that GOD does not exist.
The beauty of GOD is that He is so intrinsically woven into every fabric of the universe He created that most people don’t even understand they are declaring He exists. Let’s explore our language and the things we say.
Take sneezing for example. If someone sneezes, we say “GOD bless you”. Even if GOD is not mentioned in the beginning of the phrase we still say “Bless You”. Nearly every person in our culture says it. Is it just being polite in a formality, or are people acknowledging GOD’s existence? Besides who can bless, but GOD?
A word we use commonly is “goodbye”. We use it to bid someone farewell. When we look at the etymology of the word we find that it is a contraction for “GOD be with you”. Oh how I love that many self-professed atheists are actually declaring a benediction of farewell from the GOD they claim does not exist.
Jeremiah 13:23a “Can the Ethiopian change his skin Or the leopard his spots?”
Ironically enough, I encountered a co-worker who unknowingly quoted scripture. He stated, “Can a leopard change its spots?”(Jeremiah 13:23). When I replied, “That’s fantastic you are quoting the Bible.” He responded, “Pretend I never said that”. He was trying to cover up the fact that he was declaring truth for a GOD he did not believe in. In this instance he did not want to confront the truth which he is suppressing.
Paul tells us in the letter to Romans that GOD has already revealed to man the evidence of himself and that the proof of his existence is in each man.
Romans 1:18-19 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.
GOD has clearly put within every man the knowledge of His existence. If a person is suppressing the truth within by unrighteousness, that does not eliminate GOD’s existence.
There are many people who declare the existence of GOD without knowing it. We as believers should take every opportunity we get to share our GOD with others. Something as simple as explaining what goodbye really means can be a great segway to a conversation about Christ. After all, are they really atheist?
