Hurricane of Grace

There are certain things that can be attributed only to God.  There are things, that no matter what man’s best efforts are,  he cannot do.  Man cannot create weather, seasons, or the setting of the sun.  Man is not capable of moving the winds or changing the temperature.  There are things in the realm of the natural world that can only be done by God.

Even in our atheistic, humanist, post-modern era this is recognized by many who refute the existence of God.  How so?  The simple answer is insurance.

Let’s say there is a storm that comes through your neighborhood.  Trees are uprooted, there are power-lines down, trees crash into houses and cars.  The entire community is littered with debris from houses that were blown apart by the intense winds.  The storm has destroyed many houses and it is going to require much effort to restore the community.

People begin to call their insurance companies to file claims.  While trying to assess how the damages happened, the adjuster asks questions to rule out vandalism or fraud.  The adjuster takes the information and then decides to come out and visit the scene of the damage.  While the adjuster is there he gathers all the information and comes up with a determination.

Based off of the facts the adjuster determines that this is an act of God and could have only been done by him.  There is no human effort or power that can rip through a community and destroy houses.  Only God in his amazing power could do such a thing.  There are certain things that can only be done by God.  Hence, storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, sinkholes and acts of this nature fall into a special category in the insurance world, known as acts of God.

These incredible experiences cannot be made by man.  No matter man’s greatest effort, he will never create the awesome power of an F-5 tornado, or the fierce energy of a microburst.
There is another area in which can only be attributed to God, and that is new birth.  I’m not talking about “New Year, New You”, or transforming your looks by finally committing to a workout routine and eating well.  I’m talking about the Grace of God rushing in like a  flood into the hearts of wicked sinners spurning repentance and saving faith in Jesus Christ.
The grace that cannot be outrun no matter where you go.  The grace that hunts you down and tracks you as effortlessly as a hurricane making landfall in the storm shelter of your life.  This irresistible grace is the ultimate act of God in every believers life.  This grace is the force that breaks into the heart of stone, shattering it with the glorious light and love of God, leaving a heart of flesh that radiates and reflects God himself.
Ezekiel 36:26
Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
It is only by God’s grace that we can be saved.  There is no other agency in which man can be saved.  He cannot work his way to salvation, he cannot earn merit with God with alms and charity.  Even the best of man’s efforts is still filth without the intervening on the heart by God’s supernatural grace.
Isaiah 64:6-7
6For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. There is no one who calls on Your name…
Without God sending his hurricane of grace into the hearts of wicked men they will remain on the broad road that leads to destruction.  They will be blind to the small gate and the narrow path,  unless God intervenes.  Man is hopeless without God moving in the storms of life to deliver his gift of grace through Jesus Christ.
It is only through faith in Jesus Christ we can be saved.
Acts 4:12
“And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
It is only by his sweet, sweet grace that bombards the weary soul that one can be saved.  It is through the fiery storms of life in which we can be humbled enough to first need a savior and those same types of storms that keep us clinging to the perfect gift of grace found on the old rugged cross.
God’s beautiful gift of grace often comes through circumstances so incredible and other-worldly that the mind cannot fathom the mystery. However, when one encounters this supernatural storm in life they will be altered.  One does not encounter a force stronger than a category 5 hurricane without noticeable change.  You will be radically different after you encounter the life-altering grace of God.
Grace is the force God chooses to level every sinner to his knees.  His grace is sufficient.  The words of the old hymn “Grace Greater than Our Sin” by Julia H. Johnston says it best.
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that will pardon and cleanse within;
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that is greater than all our sin!
