So You Want to End Abortion?

42 years ago, the United States Supreme Court handed down a decision that has led to the largest holocaust in the history of the world.  Around 50 million are dead with many more that aren’t counted in the statistics because they are killed not using surgery.

42.   Years.

No Christian worth his salt wants this utter tragedy to continue.  Yet the debate about how to best bring it to an end has raged for each of those 42 years.  One thing is clear, what we ARE doing isn’t working.  Abortion has only continued to be ingrained into our Western Culture.  What previous generations have seen as taboo, this current generation sees as an unholy sacrament.  What then, shall we do?

1)  Don’t abandon the church.

The church is the one institution that God promises to bless.

“”I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.” {Mat 16:18 NASB}

“That very church which the world likes best is sure to be that which God abhors.” ― Charles H. Spurgeon

“That very church which the world likes best is sure to be that which God abhors.”
― Charles H. Spurgeon

Putting aside the historical misunderstandings of this verse somehow establishing a papacy, we can say with confidence that God IS establishing the church here.  And notice the promise… “the gates of Hades will not overpower it”.  No matter what Satan and the darkest depths of hell may throw at us, they won’t win.  The battle will cost us, but at the end of the war, the church will stand victorious.  Abortion WILL end, and the church will outlive it.

It may be dressed up as many things, but when it comes right down to it, Abortion is a lie.  A lie that says that pre-born babies are disposable.  That they can be killed simply because they are in the way.  This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this lie.  Every lie needs truth, and every truth needs support.  The church is that support.

In the church we find fellowship, accountability, support, help, rest, teaching, conviction, and much more that we need if we are going to become the hardened soldier of Christ we each must be if we are to end this national holocaust.

2)  Don’t Fall Asleep in the Church

We all do it from time to time.  We think that if we show up at church, we’ve done our part this week for God.  We can go home, watch football, take a nap, get up and go to work, go out to eat Saturday, and then pay our toll again the next Sunday.  Not So.

What are you going to do?  What good is gathering in a church, sitting under a good preacher, taking copious notes in your Bible, fellowshipping with other believers, and worshiping if you leave the church building with the exact same attitude as the world?  How can we claim to love God and do NOTHING for our pre-born neighbor.

Now, we may respond by saying “that’s not my calling”, and for some of us, we’re right!  We really are truly called to something else.  Things like far away missions, seminary, mentoring young people, adoption of needy children, teaching, and on and on.  Truly the work of the Christian and the work of the church is NEVER done.  But, brothers and sisters, hear me… the pre-born being torn limb from limb need to be a much bigger part of that work which means many more people are called than are going.

Do you have time to watch football on Sunday morning after church?  I know I do, and you know what, there’s nothing wrong with a time of rest and relaxation.  But ask yourself, just how much R&R do you really need?  What’s more important to you, your regular Thursday night television program or working with a mother who is about to kill her child?  Your answer to that question will reveal a lot more about yourself than you realize.

When we were saved, we were NOT saved unto a life of rest and relaxation, a primrose path until we get to heaven.  No brothers and sisters, this is the hard road.  Like or not, “you’re in the Army now”.

“Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier.” {2Ti 2:3-4 NASB}

3)  Preach the Gospel.  ALWAYS use words.

“I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” {2Ti 4:1-5 NASB}

You can do this too.

You can do this too.

I have a confession.  I am often amazed at the number of ways Christians avoid the obvious when trying to find ways to evangelize.  Often we make it much more complicated than it has to be.  Instead of simply going to where people are, handing out tracts and talking to them, we pour hundreds of hours and dollars into an Easter Play.  Instead of standing on a corner during a major event (a football game, for example), we try to convince the world that our event is more fun!

In no area is this “missing the forest for the trees” attitude more evident than with abortion ministry.  Can you think of a single people group MORE OBVIOUSLY in need of the Gospel than women entering a clinic to tear their child limb from limb?  It doesn’t take much to know what to say to them.  “Ma’am I know what you’re going in there to do.  Whatever may have already happened to you, it’s not going to get better by committing murder.  My Lord Jesus Christ died for your sins, whatever they may be.  You can have forgiveness and hope today and forever!  Please stop going in there so I can tell you more about that, and please don’t kill the baby inside of you.  He bears God’s image, just like you, which means He has value in God’s eyes, just like you.  Don’t end his life and ruin yours by sinning against God today.”

30 seconds and you gave them the Gospel.  If God so grants, you might have saved a life too!  Why not, Christians?  Why not do it?  Better question:  Why aren’t we doing it?  Why not take 2 hours this week and put yourself in front of the clinic in your town?  Talk to the people walking in (and out), be the light to their dark place.

Yes, I know, there are kooks and heretics who claim to be on our side who will get in your way.  Ignore them.  There will be clinic staff who will harass you.  Preach to them too.  But the only way this holocaust ends is if “pro-life” stops being merely a litmus test when voting and starts being a part of what defines us.

Christians have a long history in intervening in the tragedies that beset their culture.  Early Christians would roam the marketplaces and rescue children abandoned in dark corners; children who would otherwise be picked up by brothels and traders to be made into prostitutes and slaves…. if they didn’t die from exposure and starvation first.  Christians were a force to be reckoned with in ending slavery in both Great Britain and United States.  Missionaries have often sought out the despised and rejected of every culture.  We must do so here too.

You’re afraid?  Your life is not your own!   You’re weak?  God will give you strength!  You’re unsure or what to do?  Learn!  We must stop making excuses for why we can’t do what is right.  We must simply do it.

Do we want it to end?  Of course.  Let’s not be so foolish as to believe that anything other than…. anything short of…. God’s miraculous Gospel will end it.

“How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!”” {Rom 10:14-15 NASB}

4) Pray!  Pray again!  Keep praying.

Never stop.  Make it part of every prayer routine you have.  Pray people come to Christ, and pray women stop killing their babies.  Pray “doctors” stop helping women kill babies.  Pray God convicts them of sin, righteousness, and judgement.  Pray.

And then pray again.

Keep praying.

“”Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. “For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. “Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? … “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!” {Mat 7:7-9, 11 NASB}
